Tampines Sports Hall, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 – The first period of the floorball match between Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) was marked by a slow start and missed opportunities.
NTU was fiery in their offensive attacks with near scores by players Low Ting Yi and Nick Ow. Despite NTU's persistent attacks, credit had to be given to SP's defence.
Alif from SP also attempted to score but missed the net. The first period ended at 0-0.
Sim, a spectator who is currently working comments, “NTU has a strong team but SP is surprisingly putting up a good fight and their skills are up to par. However I still expected NTU to win. They have more experienced players like Hafeez Mohd Khassim.”
NTU kept up with their attacks while SP sadly, had no chance for offense.
SP appeared to be dedicating its manpower to defence as no players were stationed near their goal. This clearly worked at their disadvantage. NTU was awarded a penalty shot which finally earned them a point.
With the score 1-0, NTU was awarded another penalty show. Hafeez passed the ball to Tan Kai Yong who almost got the ball in, but it was caught by SP's goalie.
Still on the offense, Hafeez passed the ball to Tan Kok Ee who shot the ball straight into the net. The second period ended with the score 2-0, led by NTU.
NTU was on a roll. In the third period, they scored two more goals. The scorers were Hafeez and Low Ting Yi.
Despite the fact that NTU had control of the ball the majority of the time, SP never gave up.
More attempts at scoring were made by SP's Alif, however the situation was not going well for SP. The score now stood at 4-0.
Things were finally looking up for SP when they were awarded a penalty shot. From the corner, Muhammad Syafiq passed the ball to Muhammad Afiq bin Juraimi who aimed the ball into the goal and scored.
The game ended at 4-1, led by NTU.
Vincent Lim, captain for NTU says, “It was quite an evenly-matched game. Our opponents didn't give us an easy time. We are looking forward to the semi-finals.”
Alif, player for SP comments, “There were plenty of missed chances. I guess we have to learn from our mistakes and it's important that we do not give up. There is still room for improvement.”
