Tampines Sports Hall, Friday, 9 January 2009 - Singapore Management University (SMU) registered a win in a 3-2 victory over Singapore Polytechnic (SP) at the men’s floorball in the 2009 Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games.
Prior to the game, Wilson Ang, staff advisor from Republic Polytechnic commented that SP's team is still very young.
"Technically and tactically, they are very raw. I believe SMU will be register a win over SP," he said.
Though technically and tactically superior as compared to SP, SMU was blessed with a smile from Lady Luck in their maiden win.
From the beginning of the match, SMU began to show their superiority by dominating the proceedings. With tight marking and a full court press, SMU constantly pressured SP into making several errors.
The immaturity of SP's players showed as they soon started to quickly flick the ball up and out and just hope for the best. The first period ended with SMU leading 1-0.
In the second period, the proceedings continued and in one such instance where the ball was flicked up in a wild attempt to clear the ball, it fell nicely into the path of SP and they scored in their first touch with a back flick.
It was then that Lady Luck decided to come out from the shadows and shine on SMU.
SMU, with their short passes, were attacking through the flanks. During one of its attack, while trying to pass to another player, the ball actually richochetted off the uneven rink and fell back nicely onto their path again.
With this stroke of luck, a through pass was made to Yan Cheng Kang, who cooly then slotted into the net, leaving the SP goalkeeper motionless. The second period ends with SMU leading SP 2-1.
In the third period, Lady Luck continued to smile at SMU. In their bid to chase the game, SP adopted a full court press. This resulted in SP being open to the quick counter-attack from SMU. In one such counter-attack, SMU's swift movement up the field allowed them to come close to the goalmouth.
SP, in their desperate attempt, used their bodies to try to block the ball. A SMU player, then took a wild shot at the net and the ball deflected off SP's defender, Muhammed Ammar, and into the net. SP was left truly stunned.
SMU perhaps then decided that the scoreline was sufficient and complancy started to come in. Contented with sitting back and flicking the long ball up to waste time. SMU did not seem interested in playing anymore.
SP continued to press on and managed to score a spectacular goal through a long shot that came from the flank. The final score ended with SMU winning 3-2 with Lady Luck playing her part in the game.
Kelvin Wu, a player / coach for SMU agreed.
“Our third goal was very lucky,”
Despite the win, Jaime Chong, coach for SMU felt that the team could have done better.
“In terms of technique and tactics, SMU is a stronger team but the score line did not reflect SMU’s superiority,” she said.
