 Run NUS Run

Singapore Polytechnic, Friday, 9 January 2009 – Third place was at stake at the touch rugby Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) games between National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP). The audience anticipated one of the most exhilarating matches of the season.

The game did not disappoint when in less than five minutes, Xu Xue Ting from NUS scored touchdown. SP were forced to be more concerned with defence as NUS simultaneously attacked. But SP was not able to stop another score by Alvinia Ow from NUS. SP was now in possession of the ball. As they arrived near touchdown, SP's Clara Chew passed the ball to Jazreel Tan who dropped the ball, forfeiting the team's chance to score.

At another instance, SP's Diann Lee almost scored a point but was tagged by the opponent at the final moment. There were many such near touchdowns for SP.

At the end of the first half, the score stood at 3-0, led by NUS.

Soh Wei Wei from NUS, on the offense ran towards touchdown but she was intercepted and tagged by SP's Syahidah. Despite SP's best efforts to defend, they were not able to cover the field strategically.

NUS, now had another opportunity to attack, Xu Xue Ting in possession of the ball, was just a metre away from scoring. Xu, with her feet still rooted on the ground, lunged forward, and managed to touchdown.

And what was amazing was that Xu scored, using this method, not once but twice in the game. The NUS team continued with ferocious attacks. NUS's Kimberly Kiong, with the ball in hand, dashed to touchdown, without any opponent blocking her.

The two scorers from SP were Jazreel Tan and Mary Anne Hia. The score ends at 6-2, led by NUS.

Faizal, working adult spectator says, “NUS has won by a notable margin. SP has been trying hard to gain points and they really had some close chances. It was quite a pity for SP.”

Karen Tham, coach for NUS says, “After many days of hard work, the team really gave their all for this match. What I can say is that they reap what they sow.”

Delene Lee, player for SP remarks, “We all played with our hearts and ran our best. We could never have been better. So the important thing is that we had no regrets.”
