 You Got Served!

Temasek Polytechnic, Thursday, 8 January 2009 – The women volleyball teams from Nanyang Technological Univesrity (NTU) and Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) played hardball during the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) games. SIM, not intimidated by their bigger opponents, was on the offense since the start. It was evident that SIM had seamless teamwork although NTU was never far behind in terms of points. The first set was won by SIM.

In the second set, SIM started to pull away. Spikes after spikes came with no reply from NTU. One noteworthy attack came from Huang Zi Hui from SIM who placed her spike so accurately that NTU were left motionless. Despite NTU's best efforts, SIM won the second set as well.

During the third set, NTU appeared to have lost its pacing, causing many mistakes. SIM soon raised to a wide lead. Despite NTU's constantly rallying with each other to chase one point at a time, the mistakes and miscommunications between the team continued on.

Another impressive score included Sai Feng Hui from SIM, who did a dropped shot, allowing the ball to roll on the top of the net, before landing at the opponent's side when everyone was expecting her to spike. Sai usually stood near the net, bringing about both defence and scoring her forte. Skillful attacks and group communication made SIM a team to be reckoned with. Even though NTU was trailing behind in points, the team stood firm, scoring as many points as they can.

Fatigue started to show on the SIM team and their began to make mistakes. Insufficient covering of each other and simpl mistakes of hitting the ball into the net allowed NTU to get back into the game to make the scoreline more respectable. NTU had the glimmer of hope and stepped up on its attacks. After a tough fight, SIM won the third set with the score 25-16.

Brenda Chin, a spectator in the crowded comments, “Both teams played very well. The two teams showed endurance and tenacity. They picked up every ball. They never gave up till the very last ball.”

Sai Feng Hui, SIM, added, “We learn from our loss last Tuesday. We made sure that we do not repeat our mistakes. We strengthened our defence and were more sticky this time. We showed more teamwork.”
