*scape Game On! EURO 2008

Human Foosball Challenge!

Beads of perspiration poured down the faces of the competitors. The intensity in the air was stifling for those watching. A flying ball finally breaks the silence as two competitors jumped to get their heads to the ball. Thud!!! Their flight in mid-air was thwarted by the attached loops on their bodies which were held down by ropes stretching across the pitch. This was definitely not a typical football match!

That was the Human Foosball Challenge, a competition held during *scape Game On! EURO 2008 which took place at *scape Youth Park from 28 to 29 June 2008.

Foosball is given a whole new life as it transforms from table format to real life. Typically known as table football, players in a Human Foosball match are attached to strings that stretch across the width of the pitch. They are only allowed to move sideways, similar to how the figurines move in a game of Table Football. The game can be played in teams of 4 or 5 and the basic rules of football apply.

Several teams of Human Foosballers were curious and decided to take up the challenge. The cash prize worth a total of $3,700 was but a side attraction. Teams were split into two leagues and they battled it out during the qualifiers on 28 June to secure a quarter-final berth on 29 June.

After two days of intense competition, Team MadFootiballers defied all odds to emerge as the Champion of the Human Foosball Challenge. Congratulations to them!
