A brand new sport was conceptualized between 2002 to 2004 by Mr Filip Eyckmans, a former Belgian tennis youth champion & band manager. It was based on his two passions in life; i.e. sports and music. Hence, it’s not surprising why he decides to call the sport Bossaball, which was derived from the Brazilians influenced music genre BossaNova. A revolutionary concept, he envisioned that the accompaniment of samba music or percussion band would heighten the level of play in sports. Samba referees are occasionally employed to officiate the game as well as provide music and entertainment. They are often equipped with whistle, microphone, various percussion instruments and also a DJ set.
To date, Bossaball have spread to various countries in Europe, South America and the Middle East. It has been successfully launched in countries like Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Romania, Brazil and Dubai. In 2007, this new sporting craze makes its debut appearance in South East Asia, starting from Singapore.
