Reflections of a sailing medic
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 09-10 is the only ocean race in the world where non-professional sailors represent their city as crew from all walks of life work together to cross vast oceans and battle unforgiving weather conditions. Driven by the passion for adventure, I entered the race with the team that crossed the pacific, joined by my fellow NUS medical school classmate, Yee Onn. This is my reflection of the race that brought me dangerously close to the edge of disaster, yet gave me an experience that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Laksa, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab and bak kut teh are all Malaysian dishes, Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen declared.
On Wednesday, Datuk Seri Dr Ng accused other countries of 'hijacking' local dishes such as laksa and nasi lemak, and said it was high time that Malaysia claimed them as Malaysian.
'We cannot continue to let other countries hijack our food,' she said, without naming the countries.

Imagine waking up at four in the morning, dangling precariously from the thin piece of lee cloth next to your bunk. The skipper bellows “All hands on deck!” and as you struggle to scramble across the underbelly of the yacht you hear waves pounding the hull relentlessly. You finally get up on deck and the chill stuns you for a moment—then you remember that your fellow crewmembers are counting on you to change the sails. Standing at the bow, you feel the full force of the wind as you lead the drop and finally the yacht is depowered enough to be reined in. You are drenched and exhausted, but you let out a tiny smile as you think to yourself: Just another typical day at the office.
